About Us
The Rotary Clubs of La Jolla and Tijuana have formed a scholarship program designed to financially assist, educate, and mentor gifted teenagers from poor communities in Tijuana.
The program provides stipends to the students to help assure that they will stay in school through the 12th grade, rather than become one of the many dropouts common for schools in poor districts. We also provide weekly classes in computer skills and English as a Second Language, supplementing their public schooling. Additionally, talks and field trips oriented to career choices, political and social issues, and business and professional topics occur during the year. The students engage with one another and buddy systems between students and teachers/Rotarians are encouraged. Further guidance and financial help is available at the university level and through our Tijuana partners.
Our ultimate expectation is that these students will be models for their
families and local communities who may well be able to offer otherwise unappreciated
insights, advice, and leadership in the larger Tijuana/San Diego community.
